I can't let this week go by without

A Tribute

It's a sad week in the Bull Terrier World. We lost "Our " Rufus, on Aug 9th 2012. I use the word "our" as the whole Bull Terrier community has met him,  loved him, rooted for him, and watched him on television for so many years. He has become part of our world. It was always such a thrill to see Rufus and pose for a picture, or two, when he was in town.
" Rufus is the top winning Bull Terrier of all time. A true legend in the world of dogs. Owned by Tom and Barbara Bishop - Born April 8, 2000."
When the judges of Westminster voted Rufus best in show in 2006, I was so excited I could hardly contain myself as I watched it live on television. I had met Rufus for the first time earlier that year.
Rufus was such a beautiful dog, but just as important was the work he did in his retirement. In my opinion it is incalculable how much goodwill the breed received and continues to receive due to his charity work. Not all Bull Terriers would be so suited to be fawned over in crowds. " Rufus retrained as a therapy dog, visiting schools, nursing homes and senior citizen programs. In 2010, he was one of the winners at the 11th AKC Humane Fund Awards Award for Canine Excellence (ACE).”
Rufus Was the Ambassador for all of us, I would like to thank the Bishops for the years of getting Rufus out in public and letting the world see the beauty and sweetness of the breed.

You did us proud Rufus!

                                                                                                                                         Jackson in Memorial
Each and every bully deserves  a second chance..................

In June 2004, our seventh rescue bull terrier, Jackson , was rescued through the efforts of the Monterey Bull Terrier Club in California. When I first met him, it was love at first sight. As with most rescues, he had problems: skin, road rash, a mass on his chest, and he was non ambulatory on his right hind leg that had suffered significant muscle atrophy. After undergoing a femoral head ostectomy and removal of the mass on his chest, he needed aggressive physical therapy so he became a regular swimmer. Jackson somehow personified our other six rescues. He had the built of our Tory, the tenaciousness of Maggie, the gentleness of Queenie, the mischievous ways of Tommy, the assertiveness of Benjamin, and the coloring of our very pretty Kahlua. He never destroyed a single item in the house; he would take one of my shoes and would put it somewhere for me to find. He was strongly protective of me, and in the beginning that that created problems, because he did not want Clark to come into the bedroom if I was asleep. He also refused to let any worker come into the house and would not let our house cleaner in the master bedroom if we were not home. He mellowed over the years. Jackson was diagnosed with congestive heart failure secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease. He was on a lot of medication: furosemide, enalapril, Vetmedin, thyroid, and temeril-P twice a day and died in June 2012 and we still miss him terribly.

Joan
This was JoJo, an 8 ½ yr old bull terrier (neutered) rescued from an animal shelter
up north. (birth date 05/10/2005) on November 7, 2013. JoJo was micro-chipped and we were able to get full medical records on him from Georgia. He was left at the Ocala shelter on November 4, 2013, by a woman who stated that she only had him for a month and stated that she could not take care of him. He was very, very sick when I arrived at the shelter. He was heartworm positive and had a severe lung infection and a very high fever and extremely weak. Yet our rescue could not just leave him there to be euthanized in a cold outdoor shelter. Within two days he had to be put down since he had trouble breathing and continued to have a very high fever and could hardly walk. . For the few days we had JoJo in rescue, he was happy and loved and on the day that I took him to the Vet, he looked at me and said “yes, it is time.” He died in my arms and that is what rescue is to me.

                               BUDDY

I want to dedicate this page to Buddy. I had been doing rescue about 10 years when I met Buddy. Buddy was about 8 years old. When I picked him up from his owner surrender family, his breath was so bad I had to drive 2 hours with the windows down. I took him to the vet. He had 24 teeth removed and 2 huge tumors. He was recovering nicely, and I bought him a couple of toys. His eyes lit up!! He had never had a toy. The Silverwood was coming up in Orlando. I brought him to the Silverwood and he helped me work the Rescue table. Everyone that stopped by the table petted him, and gave him a treat. He had never been so loved. I entered him in the rescue Parade. He walked so proudly around the arena. After the Silverwood, he continued to lose more weight. I brought him back to the vet. The cancer had metastasized into his lungs. I had to have him put down so he would not suffer. It was the saddest day of my life. Even though I only had Buddy for 3 months, Buddy had taught me so much. About taking in a neglected or abused dog and loving, nurturing, and making that dog know that he is loved. He taught me about unconditional love, how I will never be alone as long as I have a dog, because they will always be your best friend forever. He taught me about trust, friendship, and acceptance. Buddy was my best rescue. R.I.P. Buddy, I love you. Live Free and Happy over in Rainbow Bridge!! Carolyn Kimbrell
